Roskilde Doctoral Schools

The PhD programme is a 3 year international research training programme. The programme aims to fulfil the current and future need for a highly qualified work force to undertake research, development and teaching assignments in the private and public sectors, for which a broad knowledge of research is required.

As a primary activity of the programme, the student is required to carry out independent research work under supervision. Furthermore the student will do course work, participate in active research environments nationally and internationally, and gain experience of teaching and other forms of knowledge dissemination. During the programme, students often spend some time at a research institution abroad.

RUC has 18 PhD programmes covering the many research areas at the University within the Humanities, Social Sciences, Technical Sciences and Natural Sciences (see the programmes here). PhD students are enrolled in one of the six Doctoral Schools at RUC. More than 250 PhD students are enrolled at RUC and app. 20% of the students are international students (2008).

At the end of the 3 years programme, the PhD student hands in the thesis for evaluation. If the evaluation is passed, the student is awarded the right to use the title PhD.
